Library

In filing order - books about finding the mysterious in the everyday, human relationships, memory, misunderstandings, printing itself, process books, sequences, tokens and the zebra.

Either Side of the Rain

Windows poem running around apertures of decreasing sizes. Letterpress text; coptic binding with embossed greyboard covers; 15.5 x 15.5cm; edition of 30; 2021

Ampersand

A selection of wooden type ampersands - a celebration of their designers’ invention and probably also, flaunting my collection. Wooden type; perfect bound with board covers; unlimited edition, 18 x 18cm; 2007

Chroma Numerica

The numbers 1-30 printed on a chromatic scale. Woodcut; perfect bound with board covers; edition of 30; 14 x 14cm; 2019

The Strangeness of Ordinary Things

Concertina, letterpress and block print. I was leant a series of random advertising blocks by the printmaker John Richardson; the ensuing book was an attempt to unify the images through a single voice - a discourse on the vicissitudes of domesticity. Letterpress and block print; concertina; edition of 20;15.5 x 11cm; 2002

More Signs

The companion book to Ampersand. A range of lino-cut and wooden type glyphs; perfect bound with board covers; unlimited edition. 18 x 18cm 2009

Rebinding

This was made for Beau Beausoleil’s al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project. Remaking – the bookbinders’ tools as metaphors for renewal. My first, and only attempt at a book edition printed through gum arabic printing; letterpress text. Edition of 6; 26.5 x 20cm; 2012

Sixties Child

Dedicated to my sister Carol ‘who misunderstood the sixties with me’.  Screenprint and letterpress; casebound; edition of 16; 25.5 x 18cm; 2010

Twelve Words

Twelve words using the structure of the book to accentuate or question literal meaning. Lino-cut texts; casebound; edition of 30; 33 x 25cm; 2019

White Horse

Made whilst working near the White Horse of Uffington. The horse is a much used symbol on school jerseys and council insignia, but it varies wildly in each interpretation; the horse’s shape refuses absolute definition. Inkjet printed with letterpress index; edition of 9; 20 x 12.5cm; 2002

Flower Riddles

Two-sided flower riddles. This book won the inaugural Hereford School of Art bookprize. My delight in winning was tempered by the fact I was the only entrant. Etching on Japanese paper using a self-generated phonetic text; concertina in slipcase; edition of 10; 15 x 12cm; 1990

Double Cross

Texts and images based around the symbol/image of the redacted cross. Mixed-media including letterpress and etching; edition of 12; 21 x 16cm; 2001

White Ghost

Above and below earth poems with personal phonetic text. Ink and white gouache; casebound; one-off book; 30 x 24cm; 2000

Two Wood Press A-Z

This was made initially for an exhibition called A-Z. I delighted in gaining prints from non-type-high objects and random printer’s ephemera. I always told my students that an A-Z was the last recourse for the uninspired, but everybody has one in them. Letterpress and relief print, edition of 30; 18 x 15.5cm 2013

One Previous Owner

This was made for exhibition at Leeds Museum and Art GalleryBooks about Books and contained a collection of marginalia and page customisation. Digital print with handmade additions and objects; edition of 12; casebound; 18 x 12cm; 2009
